Success Stories

Regional Cross-border Air Services

Through the endorsement of BIMP-EAGA BC, Layang Layang Aerospace Sdn. Bhd. Of Malaysia has been awarded an Air Service License by the Malaysian Ministry of Transport to operate scheduled air services between point in BIMP-EAGA.

The company seeks to forge a BIMP-EAGA Air Alliance with air services operators in BIMP-EAGA member countries in hopes of connecting as many BIMP-EAGA destinations as possible. It has already tied up with South Phoenix Airways of the Philippines to mount twice weekly services between Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, and Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Philippines. Thus, a link between these two "world-class destinations" for tourists is established.

Other connections such as between Zambonaga in Mindanao, Philippines, and points on the East Coast of Sabah are in the pipeline.

Transhipment Route Between Indonesia and the Philippines

A transshipment route between Bitung in North Sulawesi, Indonesia and General Santos City in Southern Mindanao, Philippines has been established, which will reduce by half the shipping time between Indoensia and the United States.

The "Rimba Tujuh" with a capacity of 200 TEUs operated by PT Humpus Intermoda Transportasi Tbk of Indonesia will ply the feeder service for mainline operator APL. It can carry both refrigerated and non-refrigerated containers as well as bulk cargo.

The maiden voyage set sail from Bitung on 1 March 2004 and arrived in General Santos City the following day.

Trans-Borneo Power Grid Interconnection

Through the initiative of the BIMP-EAGA BC and the ASEAN Centre for Energy, the Trans-Borneo Power Grid Interconnection Coordinating Committee has been formally established to bring together all the power utilities in Borneo.

This Committee has successfully undertaken a Trans-Borneo Power Grid Development Concept and Energy Trading Study, with the strong impetus driving it coming from the on-going development of the 2,400 Megawatt Bakun Hydro-Electric Dam in Sarawak, Malaysia.

This Committee and the Study it has undertaken are expected to spearhead the successful completion of the Borneo Power Grid Interconnection in alignment with the proposed ASEAN Power Grid.

Cross-Border Trade

Thriving cross-border trading activities have developed, especially between Sarawak and West Kalimantan at the land-border crossing of Tebedu-Entikong and the seas bordering Sandakan in Sabah and Zamboanga in Mindanao, Tawau in Sabah and Tarakan in East Kalimantan and Manado/Bitung in North Sulawesi and General Santos City in Mindanao.

Such activities expose many Small and Medium-scale Enterprises to the export-import business and help to forge closer sub-regional integration among BIMP-EAGA member-countries.
