PRODUCTION - BRUNEI

Natural Resources

Energy

Oil
Brunei's crude oil reserve is estimated at 1.35 billion barrels. In 2002 crude oil production has reached 163,000 barrels per day (bbl/d), mainly low-sulfur crude oil, and around 27,000 bbl/d of natural gas liquids.
Brunei's seven offshore oil fields comprises Champion (contains about 40% of total oil reserves and produces around 50,000 bbl/d), Southwest Ampa (the oldest field, with more than half of Brunei's natural gas reserves and production), Fairley, Fairley-Baram, Magpie (producing since 1977, now at 10,000 bbl/d), Gannet, and Iron Duke, plus two more fields onshore.
Major customers for Brunei's oil include Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, China, and India. Brunei Shell Petroleum has also began exporting oil to China in November 2000.

Natural Gas

Brunei's production of natural gas reached around 366 billion cubic feet (Bcf) in 2001. Around 90% is mainly produced by BSP and 10% by Total FinaElf/Fletcher. Major customers for Brunei's LNG exports include Japan (taking around 90% of Brunei's LNG exports), and South Korea. The Brunei LNG (BLNG), joint venture between Mitsubishi (25%), Shell (25%), and the Brunei government (50%) produces Brunei's LNG, with LNG being liquefied at BLNG's Lamut plant.
BLNG has a master plan to expand its capacity with an additional 4 -million-metric-ton-per-year train by 2008. Besides exports, Brunei plans to use its natural gas to develop domestic petrochemicals and energy-intensive industries (like aluminum smelting).

Electricity

In 2001, the country's installed electric generating capacity was 0.76 gigawatts (GW), all natural gas-fired. Brunei's power demand is growing at a rapid rate of around 7%-10% annually. Brunei plans for a new 500-MW, natural-gas-fired power plant as part of its economic diversification strategy.

Availability of skilled and technical manpower:

Brunei has a small size of indigenous workforce. Consequently, with the locals preference for public sector employment, both skilled and unskilled labor is recruited from abroad. There are no difficulties in securing approval for foreign workers.

Labor force: 144,000 (1995 est.); note-includes foreign workers and military personnel
Labor force-by occupation: government 48%, production of oil, natural gas, services, and construction 42%, agriculture, forestry, and fishing 4%, other 6% (1986 est.)
Unemployment rate: 4.8% (1994 est.)
